How I got started.......

HOW I GOT STARTED.........

I was admiring arrangements at a reception party for a friend. I decided to ask the hotel staff what actually happens to the flowers. Do they move them to the lobby for the enjoyment of the guests? I was told "oh no, we don't keep them." So an idea was born; why not ask to take the flowers back to my shop, redesign them & give them back to the community. Why not? Who wouldn't like fresh flowers especially in a nursing home dining room or a local school lobby. That's how "Vermont recycles Flowers "got started. With the generosity of flower donations and a little talent from Chappell's Florist designers and local volunteers, we are sharing flowers, still full of life, with members of our community who will really enjoy them. recycleflowers@yahoo.com

News for this week

This week flower arrangements were delivered to the Fletcher Allen ICU waiting rooms. I wanted to send fresh flowers here to bring a bit of cheer into these plain rooms. I hope these flowers will lift spirits. I sent also to Fanny Allen Rehab. I am now working with the VNA; cut flowers are being picked up at Chappell's florist and taken to Adult Day Care centers for flower arranging classes on Wednesday.
I am now accepting flower requests from non-profits for specific functions. I never know what kinds or colors of flowers I will receive, but nobody seems to mind.

More recycled flowers into the community

This week we designed many little arrangements and delivered them to local schools for the beginning of the school year. I also made contact with several of the activities directors at local nursing homes to see if they would like to plan a flower arranging class. At the VNA I have promised to share flowers for the enjoyment of patients with dementia. There has been research suggesting patients do better with flowers in their environment.

next week's flower project

When Tuesday arrives, I will have more flowers to design. Friends of Vermont recycles flowers are cleaning their cupboards and bring in recycled vases.
This week we delivered pretty little arrangements to many of the schools opening in the area. We also delivered to Wake Robin retirement community, Hinesburg Food shelf where each patron was given a bouquet when picking up, & Pillsbury Manor North and South locations. At Pillsbury Manor South a resident was thrilled to design the bouquets herself so we sent loose flowers.
We are requesting donations of clean recycled vases if you have some to donate.

How I got started.......

I was enjoying these really beautiful arrngements at a reception for a friend. I design flowers, and I really appreciate talented floral artists. At this event, I decided to ask the hotel staff what actually happens to the flowers. Do they move them to the lobby for the enjoyment of the guests?  I was told "oh no, we don't keep them. No one here knows what to do with them, they are so big."  So an idea was born; why not ask to take the flowers back to my shop, redesign them & give them away, why not? Who wouldn't like fresh flowers especially in a nursing home dining room or a local school lobby. That's how "Burlington recycles Flowers "got started. I'm just beginning. The fun part is calling folks and telling them my story, and asking them if they would like some flowers. Everyone thinks it's a great idea and says "yes", of course. I'll tell you my stories as this evolves.......diane
